Sophie Luo

Sophie Luo is the wife of wrongly imprisoned Chinese human rights lawyer and activist Ding Jiaxi.

Jiaxi is a prominent member of the New Citizens Movement, a loose group of  activists calling for greater government transparency, an end to state corruption, and the realisation of the democratic promises made in China’s constitution. He has been repeatedly detained or placed under travel bans, and has been imprisoned since December 2019 for attending a peaceful meeting of civil society activists in the south-eastern city of Xiamen. Jiaxi was held incommunicado and tortured after his detention, and was only formally arrested in June 2020.

Since her husband’s arrest, Luo has worked tirelessly to secure his release, as well as the release of other attendees of the Xiamen meeting and human rights defenders facing persecution by the Chinese Communist Party more broadly.
