Kaveh Shahrooz

Kaveh Shahrooz is a lawyer, human rights activist, and Senior Fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s Centre for Advancing Canada’s Interests Abroad. He has also served as a Senior Policy Advisor on human rights to Global Affairs Canada. Shahrooz has written widely on international affairs and human rights.

In January 2019, he was published in the National Post for arguing that the Magnitsky sanctions proposed in Canada’s Senate provide an opportunity to pressure Iran to stop its human rights abuses. Shahrooz also led a successful effort to convince Canada’s parliament to recognize the 1988 massacre of political prisoners in Iran as constituting crimes against humanity under international law.
