Maria Baronova

Maria Baronova is a Russian human rights activist, journalist and subject of “The Bolotnaya Case”. She was a prominent organiser of the 2011-12 protests in Russia.

Baronova organized spontaneous protests in Bolotnaya Square in May 2012 to oppose Vladimir Putin’s third term as President and highlight the plight of imprisoned dissidents. Her home was searched shortly after and she was prevented from leaving Moscow, as well as charged with inciting rioting.

She went on to work for independent news outlet TV Rain and with human rights organisation Open Russia, before running unsuccessfully for State Duma in 2016.

In 2019 Baronova joined RT as a Managing Editor.
