Lukpan Akhmedyarov

As a former editor-in-chief and reporter at Uralskaya Nedelya, Lukpan Akhmedyarov is one of Kazakhstan’s most prominent independent journalists.

In 2012 Akhmedyarov survived an assassination attempt during which he was stabbed 8 times. The attack was preceded by a number of death threats and lawsuits from regime supporters.

He won the Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism the same year.

In 2022 he was detained for his coverage of the “Bloody January” protests.
