Niemat Ahmadi is a Sudanese women’s rights defender and survivor of the Darfur Genocide.Â
Born in North Darfur, Ahmadi experienced the horrors of the genocide in Darfur firsthand and worked with community leaders to help the victims of the Janjaweed attacks. After documenting the atrocities against civilians, Ahmadi herself became the target of two assassination attempts. She was forced to flee Sudan for her safety in 2005 and found asylum in the United States. Â
Once there, she became an activist with the Save Darfur Coalition and founded the Darfur Women Action Group to raise awareness and demand justice for the gender-based violence being committed in Sudan. When civil war broke out in Sudan in 2023, Ahmadi refocused her work to documenting the extensive and ongoing sexual violence with hopes of securing justice for the victims. Â
Having already lost multiple relatives during the conflict, Ahmadi has been an essential voice in raising global awareness to the dire situation in her homeland. Ahmadi has provided expert testimonies to the media and at the UN Security Council, the UN Human Rights Council, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and the International Criminal Court. Â
Ahmadi is determined to ensure that Sudan receives the international attention needed to stop the bloodshed.Â
