Miguel Henrique Otero

Miguel Henrique Otero is the President and CEO of El Nacional, Venezuela’s last remaining independent media outlet. Since 2015, he has run his newspaper from exile in Madrid, as Venezuela’s government is pursuing him on several politically motivated charges and has publicly threatened to jail him for speaking out against the regime.

Otero was born in 1947 and holds a Mathematics degree from the Central University of Venezuela. After completing a postgraduate degree in Business Administration, he travelled to England where he studied Economics at Churchill College, Cambridge University.

In Venezuela, he is recognized as a pioneer of the professional use of new technologies both in the journalism profession and in the management of media companies. His experience and wide knowledge of institutions have been applied not only in his national daily but also in business schools (IESA), not-for-profit organizations (Red Cross of Venezuela, Artisan Foundation Colonia Tovar ) and human rights organizations (SIP/IAPA), among others.

In February 2022 the headquarters of his newspaper were wrongfully seized by an ally of President Nicolas Maduro.
